Prompts:
2x5obsession – “lowered lashes” and 100quills - #22 (denial)
Notes: Set post-war, references to character death.
Summary: Harry doesn’t think he’s ready to move on even though he knows Hermione wants him to.
She looks at Harry through lowered lashes and he attempts to deny what he feels for her. They’ve been through so much together and they’ve lost so much, yet they’ve always had one another through everything. He doesn’t want to admit that he loves her more than a friend and that he desires her. To Harry, admitting that would be the final acceptance that Ginny and Ron are both dead. And he refuses to accept that they are both lost to him forever. Yet the sight of Hermione with a single teardrop running down her cheek as she admits defeat in her battle to get him to accept their mutual feelings hurts him in a way that he never thought possible.
“Hermione,” Harry whispers her name as he holds her.
“They would want you to live your life,” Hermione states as she angrily pushes him away.
“I know but it just feels wrong. It’s as if I am being unfaithful to Ginny.”
“She’s been dead for four years, Harry. She didn’t sacrifice her life to protect you so that you could live your life as a shadow.”
“Please,” Harry begs as Hermione turns away from him and walks to the window.
“No! You’re making a mockery of the sacrifices that Ginny and Ron both made for you and I am tired of it. I love you Harry and I want you,” Hermione stated as she turned to face him.
“I know,” Harry quietly agrees as he wraps his arms around himself.
“I love you, but I can’t compete with either Ginny’s ghost or Ron’s, so please start living.”
“But, I’m not ready.”
“All I want from you is for you to start living in the present and not in the past. Live for today, Harry. Live for me. Live for Ron and Ginny, please,” Hermione pleads as she drops to her knees in front of Harry, “I am only asking you to move forward with your life.”
Harry looks at Hermione and a part of his heart is breaking into pieces because he’s caused her so much pain. He knows that she’s right but at the same time he’s afraid to let go of the past. He’s more afraid of letting go of the past than he ever was to face Voldemort. If he lets go, he’s afraid that he’ll forget how Ginny sounded when she was scolding him or her brothers, or how she smelt when he first kissed her, or the sound of her laughter. Yet he knows that Hermione is right in berating him for making a mockery of Ginny’s final sacrifice on the battlefield.
“I don’t know if I can let go, but I’ll try for you,” Harry promises as he catches hold of Hermione’s hands.
“That’s all I ask.”
He suddenly kneels down in front of her so that they are face-to-face and he hesitantly stares into her amber-coloured eyes. Harry briefly wonders how she can be so strong and what he ever did to deserve a best friend like her, much less her love. And in an instant he knows that he’s more than ready to try for her and he moves even closer to her so that he can feel her warm breath on his lips. There’s a hopeful question in her eyes and he’s determined to show her that he’s willing to try for her, so he kisses her. It’s a gentle kiss of exploration and as she closes her eyes, Harry knows that he can’t keep denying what he feels for her. And as she leans into him, he knows that it’s not a betrayal of his finance or of Ron.
